Trauma refers to stress far beyond normal experience. Normal stress, such as relationship difficulty, work problems, or health problems can be very painful, but stress and trauma are different. Trauma involves life-threatening experiences, such as being a victim of a violent crime, a sexual assault, surviving a life-threatening accident or disaster, serving in a war zone (military veterans), working as a first responder, or directly witnessing one of the above events. Trauma has a distinct impact on people. For some individuals, the impact is brief, but for others, there are longer-term emotional and behavioral problems. Examples of trauma symptoms may include:

  • Problems regulating mood
  • Anxiety
  • Sadness
  • Irritability
  • Intrusive thoughts of the trauma
  • Nightmares
  • Sleep problems
  • Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
  • Avoidance of social situations
  • Being easily startled

Some individuals who have been exposed to trauma develop Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), while others develop anxiety problems or depression. If you have been exposed to trauma, you will most likely experience some of the above symptoms but if they continue beyond a few weeks, and especially if the symptoms interfere with your social life or work, treatment would likely help you in your recovery.

Research has identified several treatments as being effective in trauma recovery. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has the strongest evidence for effectively helping people recover from trauma. This type of treatment involves helping the traumatized individual understand how the trauma has impacted him or her (that is how life is different before and after the trauma) and also learning techniques of effectively coping with negative thoughts and behaviors.

At Piedmont Counseling Center, our staff has specialized training and experience in trauma recovery. Processing traumas can be painful and frightening. Our staff will guide you in a recovery process that fits your needs. You will not be asked to share anything until you are ready and your therapist will take great care to support you in the process.
