What is a psychologist?

Psychologists are licensed mental health professionals who have completed a doctorate in clinical psychology, completed required supervision hours, and passed the licensure exam.  Psychologists are experts on the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems.  Psychologists are able to perform psychological testing which can be very helpful in diagnosis and treatment planning.  Piedmont Counseling Center is located in Kernersville, North Carolina and has psychologists as team members who are licensed in the state of North Carolina.  You may read more about our psychologists by following the link to our staff member pages.

How to Choose a Psychologist

While some other therapists also complete doctorates, psychologists are the only mental health professionals for whom a doctorate is required to become independently licensed.  Psychologists are well qualified to work in a private practice setting.  All psychologists are able to help general mental health issues, such as stress and depression.  Most psychologists choose to obtain additional training and supervised experience in specific types of treatment and presenting issues.  For example, some psychologists specialize in Christian Counseling or Couples Counseling.  Some psychologists may learn specific types of treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, or the Gottman Method of couples counseling.
